The driver of a semi-truck was injured Monday when his vehicle and a train collided in the Waldo County town of Prospect. He was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries. There were no other passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

“He was upright, moving and breathing,” said Prospect Fire Chief David Terry. “The driver was out and on the ground. Whether he self-extracted himself, or fell out of the cab of the truck, I’m not positive.”

The crash happened where Muskrat Farm Road crosses over train tracks just east of Route 1A, also known as Bangor Road.

The crash was reported just before 1 p.m. For a few hours afterward, the truck was just to the side of the tracks with a badly damaged cab. There was no cargo container on it. Many police officers, firefighters and workers were at the crash site.

The train, which had Canadian Pacific written across its locomotive, appeared to have backed away from the crash scene and was standing idle. It had no obvious damage.

State workers arrived around 2:45 p.m. to remove diesel fuel that was slowly leaking from the truck, according to Terry.

Little other information was immediately available about the crash, including what caused it or whether the train had any cargo.
