A candidate for the Union seat for Regional School Unit 40 school board has requested a recount of the June 11 election, according to The Courier-Gazette.
Timothy Wood, who lost to Rachel Wilcox by nine votes, requested the recount Monday, The Courier-Gazette reported.
The election results had shifted the balance on the board of the midcoast school district after it narrowly voted earlier this month to remove protections for transgender students. Voters elected three new board members who were opposed to the change, including Wilcox, who replaced someone who had voted to keep the policy.
Wood has said that he was in favor of ending the policy.
The current makeup of the school board, with Wilcox in the seat, is tipped in favor of members who want to retain the transgender policy. If Wood were to win a recount, the number would go back to being tied.
The recount will be held at 2 p.m. Monday behind the Union Town Office, and will be open to the public, according to The Courier-Gazette.
