The man charged with manslaughter in the beating death of a toddler in the Thomaston area in May is finally back in Maine for court proceedings, but more details about his alleged crimes or the child’s death still have not been made public. At his first appearance in a Maine court in Rockland on Monday morning, Aziayh Scott, 23, did not enter a plea and a justice set his bail at $250,000, according to The Courier-Gazette. Scott has been charged in the death of 22-month-old Quayshawn Wilson, who was found unresponsive in a Thomaston Walmart parking lot in May. However, a court clerk said that the affidavit demonstrating probable cause for Scott’s arrest remains sealed. Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Ackerman told The Courier-Gazette that the release of the affidavit would harm the investigation. Scott had moved from Louisiana to Maine to live with his girlfriend in Owls Head, and after he was arrested on June 5, he was kept in Louisiana on an unrelated robbery charge, Maine State Police have said. He returned to Maine on July 18, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 3, according to The Courier-Gazette. Police responded to a call that the toddler was not breathing on May 29, after his mother returned to load groceries into the car. The toddler’s mother, who is a traveling nurse, tried to perform emergency care on him until paramedics arrived. The child was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, where he died from what the state medical examiner’s officer later determined was blunt-force trauma and a homicide.
