A 71-year-old Topsham woman was seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon when a deputy hit her turning car in Brunswick.
The crash happened at 2:34 p.m on Harpswell Road near Bickford Avenue. Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy Todd McGee was traveling south in a sheriff’s Ford pickup cruiser “with emergency equipment activated,” according to Brunswick police.
The deputy passed a line of southbound vehicles by crossing the double yellow line of the two-lane road and driving in the oncoming traffic lane, according to the description from police and photos of the scene.
Penelope Ebberts, who was traveling in the same direction and several cars ahead of McGee in a Subaru Outback, tried to make a left turn and McGee’s pickup truck hit Ebberts’ car.
Ebberts’ car came to a rest on its driver’s side and McGee stopped at a nearby construction area, according to police.
Ebberts was brought to Maine Medical Center with serious, but non-life sustaining injuries, police said. McGee was also brought to Maine Medical Center with minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time.
Ebbert’s car and the sheriff’s pick-up cruiser were both totaled.
The crash is under investigation, Brunswick police said.
