Rockland has lost more than $18,000 to a hacker.
On Jan. 17, the city attempted to transfer $28,000 to Vortex Services LLC, for its work related to Lindsey Brook, according to the Courier Gazette.
But a phisher hacked the email chain between Rockland and Vortex, and provided fraudulent electronic transfer information, the Gazette reported.
It wasn’t until Jan. 25 that Rockland learned that Vortex never received the payment.
Last month, Rockland learned that $9,394 was recovered from Green Dot Bank, the financial institution where the phisher deposited the stolen money before immediately withdrawing it, according to the Gazette.
The Rockland City Council will vote Monday on whether to write off the remaining $18,606 lost in the hack, the newspaper reported.
Rockland, in the meantime, hasn’t processed any electronic money transfers since January.
