Stockton Springs paid its recently fired town manager $9,689 upon his separation from the town, but local officials still have not publicly shared the reason he was let go, according to a copy of his termination letter obtained by the Bangor Daily News.

That letter indicated that Mac Smith was fired for “no cause,” meaning the town did not have to legally provide a justification for it.

Smith was fired on Dec. 30 after just over three years in the position. Loren Cole, the deputy director of the town’s ambulance service, is now serving as interim town manager.

In response to previous questions, Select Board members have declined to share their reasons for terminating Smith, saying only that the town needed to “go in a different direction.”

The termination letter also indicated that Smith was paid “one month’s stipend” of $5,629 after his firing, as well as $3,754 for unused vacation time and $306 for sick leave and his last day in the office.
