Stockton Spring’s offer to buy a historic former sea captain’s property at 326 Main St. has fallen through after the seller got cold feet.

Local officials had hoped the 9-acre property — which also includes a 6-bedroom home built in 1830 — could eventually become the headquarters for the town’s fire and ambulance services. They had hoped to close on the sale by early March.

But on Jan. 31, property owners Gary and Deborah Donaldson of New Haven, Connecticut backed out of the deal, according to Interim Town Manager John Bellino. Little other information was shared with the town.

“We were contacted by the seller’s attorney,” Bellino said. “He just does not want to sell.”

The property, which is often referred to as “Tally-Ho” after an inn and horse riding camp that used to be located there, is now listed as off market.
