A Searsport man was arrested over the weekend on charges of stealing a camper trailer and two sheds that were found at his residence on Skinner Pit Road.
Craig Thomas was charged with multiple counts of Class B theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and taken to Waldo County Jail, according to the Maine State Police. He also had an outstanding arrest warrant for alleged home repair fraud.
But police were not able to find a mounted black bear that had reportedly been in the camper before it was allegedly stolen in 2024.
During an interview with police on Saturday, Thomas allegedly claimed to have paid $1,600 for the Hampton Crossroads camper trailer and moved it to his property several months earlier. The camper was valued at $18,000. But police said the person that Thomas claimed to have bought the trailer from denied any connection to him.
Thomas allegedly stole the sheds from a nearby gravel pit during a previous snow storm, using heavy equipment that belonged to his employer. They were valued at $3,000 and $8,000. His employer was not implicated in the theft.
Anyone with information regarding the missing bear is encouraged to contact Cpl. Quintero of the Maine State Police at 207-624-7076.
