A man from Honduras allegedly in the U.S. illegally was arrested in Wiscasset on Friday.

Renan Modesto Noralez Dolmo, 30, was charged with providing a false name and date of birth, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, eluding, criminal speeding, driving to endanger, operating without a license, and being a fugitive from justice, according to Wiscasset Police Chief Larry Hesseltine.

Police stopped Dolmo on Bath Road in Wiscasset about 12:40 p.m. Friday. During the stop, he gave officers a name and date of birth from a temporary Ohio registration.

A search of U.S. Border Patrol records led officers to suspect Dolmo may not be in the country legally. When questioned, Dolmo reportedly admitted to being in the country unlawfully, according to Hesseltine.

Border Patrol arrived at the scene 10 minutes later, and after being questioned, Dolmo allegedly sped away, leading police on a chase during which speeds exceeded 100 mph.

The chase came to an end on Gardiner Road at a construction site, where Dolmo worked. He fled into the woods and climbed 20 to 30 feet up a tree. Dolmo refused to come down and threatened to harm himself, according to Hesseltine.

After four hours of attempting to negotiate with him, officers left to obtain an arrest warrant.

A search of Dolmo’s vehicle turned up a passport that confirmed his real identity, Hesseltine said Monday morning. Officers discovered Dolmo had warrants for his arrest out of Ohio for burglary and aggravated burglary.

Officers returned to the scene and tracked Dolmo to a 140,000-square-foot site with 104 one- and two-bedroom units, which posed a challenge for police to search because of the size of the area and Dolmo’s familiarity with it.

Police dogs tracked him to an attic, where he fell through the ceiling once, but he continued to evade officers for more than four hours, Hesseltine said.

Eventually, he was confined to the roof, where he was taken into custody and then brought to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
