A Nova Scotia man is dead after the sailboat he and two other people were on ran aground off Isle au Haut early Monday morning.

Thomas Kent Smith, 72, was sailing with Robert and Sandra Comeau, of New Hampshire, when their sailboat ran aground. The Comeaus called 911 at about 3 a.m. to report that they were stranded on shore near Cape Ann Ledge at the southern end of Isle au Haut after their 40-foot sailboat began to break apart on the rocks, according to the Maine Department of Marine Resources.

The Comeaus reported that they found Smith’s body in the water after the boat broke apart and were able to pull him to shore where he was recovered by Marine Patrol at about 5 a.m., according to the department.

The couple reported that all three were wearing life jackets and had been in the water for more than an hour.

Marine Patrol brought Smith’s body to Stonington for examination by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner at an Ellsworth funeral home. The Comeaus were also brought to Stonington, examined and released by emergency medical personnel, the department said.
