The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the Boothbay-area waste transfer station, but little other information was immediately available about the probe.

Tim Callery, a spokesperson for the Boston office of the FBI, said that agents were doing “routine law enforcement activity” at the regional transfer station in Boothbay on Wednesday. He said members of the Boothbay Harbor Police Department were also present.

Callery declined to comment further.

Local officials first confirmed the investigation during a Boothbay Select Board meeting on Wednesday, after a reporter from the Boothbay Register newspaper asked whether the FBI had raided the transfer station of the Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District earlier in the day, according to a video of the meeting.

“I think everybody can confirm it, but nobody knows what’s going on,” a local official said in response to the question.

“There is an ongoing investigation and any information that you would like, you need to speak to the FBI office in Boston,” another official said.

In the video, it was not clear which officials were responding to the questions.

Officials at the transfer station and the Boothbay town office did not immediately respond to questions on Thursday.

Located on Country Club Road in Boothbay, the refuse district offers waste disposal for the towns of Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb and Southport.
