A Searsport home was destroyed and two pets died in a fire Tuesday afternoon.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen on the front side of the home on 438 East Main St., according to Interim Searsport Fire Chief A.J. Koch. The cause of the blaze wasn’t immediately clear. The home was a total loss.
One resident was home when the fire started. They were alerted by a fire alarm and were able to flee without any injuries. It was reported to firefighters at around 12:30 p.m..
“It was initially reported as a fully-involved structure fire [at the time of the call],” Koch said.
But two animals, a dog and a cat, perished in the fire and were found afterward by firefighters.
Searsport received mutual aid from West Frankfort, Belfast and Stockton Springs firefighters.
The fire was extinguished by approximately 2 p.m., according to Koch.
The state fire marshal’s office will investigate the cause of the fire.
