A man who was found dead outside a home in Palermo earlier this month was killed, Maine State Police said on Tuesday.

On April 19 at about 10:30 a.m. police were called to 128 Boots and Saddle Road in Palermo for a welfare check, where they found a man dead outside the residence, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said.

Believing the circumstances to be suspicious, they brought the body of the man, identified as 56-year-old Robert Bruso, of Palermo, to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, where his death was ruled a homicide, Moss said.

Bruso owned the property where he was found dead, according to town tax records.

Police have not yet released his cause of death. Moss said there is no known danger to the public.

Bruso’s golden retriever, Lenny, is missing and may be in the area of Route 3 near Boots and Saddle Road or Level Hill Road in Palermo, Moss said. Anyone with information, is asked to contact the Augusta Regional Communication Center at 207-624-7076
